We have called this job a Chief of Staff as that’s the closest recognised role title - an all-rounder who can do projects across the business with a high level of ownership and independence. The successful candidate for this role will likely go on to hold 4+ job titles in their time at Spill because they continually take full responsibility for part of the organisation and then make themselves redundant to move on to the next part.

Spill is a business that was set up with the goal of providing as many people as possible with high quality mental health support free at the point of use. We do that by providing therapy and counselling to employees in businesses (paid for by the company). Last year we delivered 30,000 therapy sessions on Spill
We currently work with over 500 businesses and in revenue terms have grown to £2.7m ARR from a start of £0 ARR a few years ago. We’ve raised money from investors in the past but have been cashflow positive as a business for the last 12 months. We currently have 12 FTEs most of which are in our product team which currently consists of 1 product person, 1 designer and 6 engineers. The rest of the roles are in marketing, clinical and customer support.
We’re a small team but the ambitions of Spill remain huge. Right now our customers are based in around 30 countries and they are already a diverse bunch. We work with immigration lawyers, food preparation services and creative design agencies. We believe that every business can benefit from having professional support available to their team when they need it, which means we have a lot of work ahead of us.
Before explaining the specific responsibilities of this role, it’s worth stating that this role is going to have real responsibility at Spill. This role will be responsible for solving some of Spill’s biggest business challenges in the coming years and will hold the standard for the work we do in really important areas of the business. This is not an easy job.
The role can be split out in to two main areas of responsibility: running business operations and driving new projects with the latter being the biggest area of responsibility.
You will manage finance, customer service and legal.
Finance
We have a part-time finance person (Olivia), our accountants and an automated billing system that currently runs all of finance at Spill. We’ve worked out a lot of the kinks already.
You’ll need to own this area of the business but importantly be the voice of finance at Spill. You’ll be creating forecasts to help us make the right decisions and you’ll need to communicate when we need to focus on things like churn or extending runway. You will also have to make sure others have the financial context required to make the right decisions.
Customer service
We currently have 2 people at Spill who do customer service at Spill. Once again, things are running smoothly. You’ll need to keep our standards of service high and make sure that our processes adapt as we scale.
Legal
This is probably the smallest area of business operations. We have an external DPO and lawyers who we use as resources for most things. You’ll need to make sure that we’re continuing to set things up correctly when we’re adding new functionality to Spill and think strategically when it comes to prioritising what we should work on vs the cost of complying with regulations in that area. More on this in the projects work.
