About the company

Spill’s mission is to reduce unnecessary emotional pain by making high quality mental health support easily accessible for people around the world. We have already achieved a lot, we recently delivered our 100,000th therapy session that was free for the person who accessed it, but still have so much more to do.

On the company itself, we operate with an intentionally small HQ team (currently 6 full time employees, 2 are engineers), and we work in-person together in Shoreditch, London.

Right now, we are all focused on increasing the amount of money that goes towards funding talk therapy for people who need support. We offer a product for businesses that lets employees book in next-day therapy sessions. That product has been bought by over 500 companies and used by over 30,000 employees so far.

We could go on, but our company handbook is public, so you can read that here to get a fuller sense of the company’s mission, strategy and ways of working.

About the role

Ultimately, the purpose of this role is to develop software that either enables Spill to work with more companies, or lowers the cost of providing Spill. You will fulfil that role by working within a cross-functional team to develop new features and functionality for our product.

Initial work

This role has the initial “mission” on the lowering the cost of providing Spill side: to build and run the "Internal OS" that automates every administrative task at Spill (onboarding, billing, therapist matching).

It’s typical for startups / scale ups to put all early engineering resource into new product features in order to unlock more growth. They then hire a bunch of ops people to handle all of the support and admin work that comes with that growth. At Spill, our mission is to make high-quality mental health support accessible to as many people as possible and a large part of making something accessible is making it affordable. This means that in order to achieve our mission, we have to keep our operating margins as low as possible.

It’s likely that this mission will last for most of this year as we’re scaling.

What this role will actually do

You will be part of a 3-4 person engineering team and will be the most senior backend engineer on the team. You will work cross functionally on projects with design, product, clinical, sales and marketing and operations with other engineers and as the only engineer. Calvin, Spill’s founder, or Harry, Spill’s VP Ops, is the most likely person to be the PM (ie be the person shaping the goals and scope of the work) on projects you work on. However, for some projects, you may also be required to take on that role.

50% of your time will be spent on building and improving the product and internal tools themselves and 50% of your time will be spent on the layer above to improve efficiencies across multiple products and tools at once.

Here are some examples of the types of projects this role would work on:
